I live in Casernes, Curepipe, an area that hosts several government-run agricultural initiatives as well as the Police Barracks — which is what “Casernes” means in English. If you’re curious, you can read a bit about the history of Casernes here and learn about the origin of my street’s name here
Trou au Cerf Bridge: A Spot for Action
On Friday, the 19th of September 2025, we had a day off from school. Even though it was just a day before World Clean-Up Day, I decided to do a little neighbourhood clean-up. At first, the area seemed fairly clean, but when I looked closer, I noticed small bits of rubbish that people usually ignore.
I walked along several roads and eventually reached Trou au Cerf Bridge, also known as Cardinal Bridge. There were so many plastic bottles and cans under the bridge that, within thirty minutes, my garbage bag was already full. The experience made me realise how even small acts, like picking up litter, can make a big difference.
World Clean-Up Day Inspiration
On World Clean-Up Day itself, I met a volunteer from H-Mart who gave me an eco-friendly bag. It was inspiring to see so many people working together to keep Mauritius clean, and it made me feel proud to contribute in my own small way.
Reflections on the Day
This clean-up experience taught me more than just picking up litter. I realised that even small actions can create a positive impact on the community and the environment. It also made me appreciate the effort and dedication of volunteers working to keep our surroundings clean. By taking part, I felt connected to my neighbourhood and proud to contribute in my own way. Most importantly, it reminded me that slowing down, noticing small details, and taking action — no matter how small — can make a real difference in the world.
